This example shows boxes drawn around bells that are making a place, with a cross drawn between the pairs that are about to cross over. It works well with method ringing because it shows how the bells making places form barriers that force the bells between them to move in the directions they do.
There is another option that highlights the pair (or pairs) of bells that are about to change places. This works well with call changes since it draws attention to the bells that move and leaves the rest unmarked.
The swapping pairs begin to move just as the last bell of the old row sounds. The digits move smoothly to exchange places, finishing as the first bell of the new row sounds its blow. New boxes and crosses are then drawn for the change that is to come next.
The result is an effective animated demonstration of place notation that would enagage the interest of those new to change ringing as well as existing ringers.
